Apple now selling iPhone 3G unlocked in Hong Kong

26 09 2008

Apple is now selling its iPhone 3G unlocked via its on-line Apple Store in Hong Kong. The 8GB model sells for HK$5,500 (about US$694) or HK$6,200 (about $797) for the 16GB model. It was already available since July 11th with a local Hutchison Telecommunications contract. So, will the officially unlocked iPhone 3G become available on the US Apple online store soon? 😉 It IS gonna happen, we just don’t know when. :/

This is the first time that Apple has sold its device unlocked in Hong Kong:

“iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.”

The terms and conditions limit sales to those in Hong Kong only — not that the gray market cares about T&Cs. 😛 eBay, anyone?

It’ll be interesting to see if Apple extends the unlocking more broadly (presumably as exclusivity deals expire) or if this is strictly a local phenomena. Officially unlocked iPhone 3G’s have been popping up in Australia, New Zeland, Switzerlan, Italy, Germany[black market], and the UK [illegally sold in some stores].

Black or White?

20 09 2008

As some of you might already know, m old iPhone passed away a few months ago.. God rest its cercuits! And an acquaintance of mine just got a shipment of legally unlocked white iPhone 3G’s. The good thing is, the white one only comes in a 16GB version. The only downside here is that I’ve had my eye on the black one for quite some time.

The one thing I’m worried about is not being able to install the [Installer] application that would allow me to install Arabic fonts and additional supporting applications.

So, should I go ahead and get it? or should I hold out for a black version. Of course, the phone is ridiculously overpriced.. but I’m out of options. Note that only the back of the phone is white.

R.I.P iPhone – Delish – No Knobs?

27 06 2008

@ Home:

I dropped my 8GB iPhone in water.. and um.. it sorta died. I quickly dried it off and watched the screen slowly flicker then turn white. After that, it kept rebooting, over and over again. And finally, it died. After drying it off with a hair dryer, and keeping it, face down, in a container of rice, it started working. But, the screen’s not lit and not responsive. It’s depressing. I’ve had it since November. I loved it. I want it back.

Anyway.. the new 3G iPhone is coming out soon [July 11th].. but I’m not sure how people are gonna get their hands on one. Sure the features are amazing, and the price is really low, but you can’t get one unless you sign a 2 or 3-year contract with AT&T. Hmmm.. I just hope someone finds a way. FAST.

R.I.P dear iPhone – You’ve been a great friend. 😦

@ The Terrace Grill:

Went to the Terrace Grill today with the family and had a great time. I shared a plate of Escargot with one of my sisters, and it was delicious. For the main course, I had the Surf and Turn dish, which is a combination of Fillet Mignon and Lobster Tail. Well, the Fillet was amazing, but the Lobster wasn’t that good. I’m guessing it’s because it’s not Canadian [out of season] but Australian. And for desert [drum roll please] I had the Chocolate Tart with chocolate creamy filling and vanilla ice cream. It was delicious, but not as good as it was before.

@ The Avenues:

Went to the Avenues with one of my sisters to get her a new phone and iPod. Just before the not so fruitful experience with X-Cite [Alghanim Electoronics], we found a parking at level A4. So we’re walking to the entrance right? when we got there, I reach out for the doorknob and was surprised to find this…

… ummm.. has the world run out of doorknobs? or is this a new trend?

Anyways, it was a good day el7imdillah.

Take care & stay safe all,
